Meet Ihechi.

Director of Communications | Media Analyst

Ihechi Ezuruonye is a native of Southfield, Michigan. She is currently an M.A International Affairs candidate at American University in Washington, D.C. She enjoys traveling and studying other languages and is currently learning Japanese, Korean, and her Nigerian mother tongue of Igbo. She is a Boren and Critical Language Scholar who lived abroad in Japan, and visited a number of countries in the region. Ihechi is interested in how bilateral relations between Asian and African countries shape investment and development policies, and the role it plays in changing cultural and societal norms. Ihechi serves as one of Roots Strong’s Director of Communications as the organization's Media Analyst. As the organization's Media Analyst, Ihechi will be integral in introducing our supporters and communities to some of the social issues faced by the communities we serve. Ihechi's role in the organization not only entails producing media and literature for social awareness, but she will be integral in organizing and planning the organization's initiatives and programs.

I have never met anyone else with my name!

If you could fix 1-3 world problems affecting youth, what would they be?

If I could fix world problems affecting youth, they would be remedying the dropout and low college turnout rates of PoC highschoolers and post-secondary students, respectively.

What are some social issues that you are passionate about?

I am passionate about Black Lives Matter, female literacy, climate change, and global poverty.

When you hear the words “Roots Strong”, what does it mean to you?

Roots Strong to me means advocacy, education, and empowerment of our youth through literacy programs, access to food, and mentorship. It represents an organization that keeps me grounded in my community and offers the chance to help locals in my area.
